Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya

Located 40 miles (60 km) south of Cancun on the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean, is Playa del Carmen. Over the past few years this former fishing village has become cosmopolitan, with people from all over Europe and the Americas making it their home or vacation destination. Still, Playa del Carmen retains its friendly, beach town charm.

The warm-year-around temperature and white sandy beaches make it an ideal spot for those who just want to sunbathe and spend time away from it all. But for others who prefer a more active vacation, this area of the Riviera Maya has much to offer.

Snorkelers and scuba divers should not miss the world-class reefs and stunning “cenotes” that lead to underground caverns. Other water sports such as kite surfing and fishing are also popular activities. For an equal adrenaline rush outside of the water, one can choose from a variety of activities such as sky diving, ATV tours through the jungle, etc.

For those who would prefer to soak up history, rather than the sun on the beach, there are a number of archeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Coba which are located short distances away. One can also experience local culture by visiting a colonial city or a Mayan village.

Running parallel to the beach is 5th Avenue or as the locals call it, “La Quinta”. Along this and its side streets are numerous shops, bars, clubs, and restaurants which specialize in local dishes and international cuisine. When night falls these same streets come alive with music and entertainment. Trendy or more traditional Mexican bars and clubs are open until the wee hours.

At the south end of La Quinta, in an exclusive area known as Playacar, is a beautifully manicured 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Von Hagge.

Amongst other options for relaxation are spa services, massage therapy, or even massages on the beach. For the more sports-minded, private or group yoga classes are a popular choice, and there are several new fitness centers in convenient locations.
